PATHWAYS
uses multiple approaches to encourage the generalization and
maintenance of the skills and behaviors specified in each
child's IFSP/IEP. These include use of multiple exemplars,
multiple teachers, and varied settings.
Therapeutic
PATHWAYS also emphasizes the early introduction into peer
situations such as play dates, play groups, and gymnastics
as part of its approach to achieving generalization and functional
skills. These components have proven critical to successful
school experiences later in the program. Parents and personnel
from the regional center and the child's school district have
a special responsibility to help identify and arrange such
opportunities.
Therapeutic
PATHWAYS' instruction in self-management procedures includes
the early introduction of Photographic Activity Schedules
(MacDuff, Krantz & McClannahan, 1993) as well as self-recording,
self-reinforcement and incorporating "child choice"
early in treatment. This emphasis helps promote generalization
of skills and establishes a foundation to draw upon in more
complex environments such as general education classroom settings
which necessitate high levels of independent functioning.
